Genesis 21 is what we’re reading together today.
- In the beginning of this chapter we read that God came through on his promise to give Abraham and Sarah a son of their own. They named him Isaac. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90. That’s pretty old to have a kid. It’s no wonder Sarah laughed at God when he said she’d have a child of her own.
- Then Abraham and Sarah threw a party for their son Isaac. At that party Ishmael, Hagar and Abraham’s son, was seen mocking Isaac. Sarah demanded they both be thrown out of the household. Which certainly sounds harsh and probably overreacting to the situation but either way it’s what happened.
- Hagar finds herself wandering in the desert with her young son. Then we read a heart wrenching scene where Hagar lays her son down under a bush to die of thirst and then walked away crying. But God speaks to her and shows her a well for them to drink from.
We read about God saving Hagar and Ishmael once again. As Hagar was sitting there crying she had to be thinking where was the “God who sees her” that she met before? Then God speaks. He shows her a well to drink from and tells her that her son would father a great nation. It’s easy when we’re in the middle of a tough time to forget how God has taken care of us before. Are you going through a really difficult time right now? Take time to look at how God has been evident in your life before and trust him this time too. God loves you more than you can fathom and he delights in caring for us. We just need to be in tune with him to see it.
