1 May - Psalms 48 and 49

Today we’re reading Psalms 48 and 49 in the Verve Bible Reading Plan. Below you will find a few things to think about:
  1. Psalm 48 opens talking about a city where God dwells and it being a place of security because God is there. Then the psalmist writes about the temple within this city and how they praise God there. The last line declares that they will follow God forever.
  2. Psalm 49 opens with a call to all people to heed his words.
Psalm 48 tells of a great city that God inhabits and it’s people praise him. The last line says they will follow the God of their city for ever and he will be their guide to the end.
Psalm 49 talks about the difference of trusting in ourselves or in God. The writer asks why we should fear when evil days come? Why should we fear men? We all live and die and there is nothing we can do about that no matter what success we attain. People who trust in themselves or their riches have no hope but those who trust in God have hope. The writer tells us that even if a follow of God attain great wealth he will not forget that he doesn’t take it with him when he dies. The difference in the person who trusts themselves and the one who trusts God is the later trusts in something that cannot fail.
What do you trust in? Sure we all know the “right” churchy answer but really; what do you trust in? Your strength? Your money? Your success? Your intelligence? We can lose all these things very easily; from sickness, to an unexpected collapsed economy, to Alzheimer's. We should put our trust in that which can’t fail us. The Bible constantly teaches us that there is only one constant in this world and that’s God. The Bible also tells us God wants to give us hope and a future to look forward to. He is worthy of our trust. Ask God to help you learn to trust him more.
