Ok sorry I have not been on in awhile. I disconnected from the tech world for a bit to get the rest of my life "under control," (about as under control as a hurricane but at least I got to spend some time with my beautiful wife and wild son.)
But back to the topic of Mr.
Osteen. . .
First let me say the "nice" stuff. Joel
Osteen is unarguably a great public speaker, and of course he has some really perfect hair too. He is the pastor of the largest church in America with 47,000 in attendance. This is more than double the next largest church, of 23,000 which is Willow Creek lead by Bill
Hybels (who is outstanding, just in case you were wondering.) So with numbers like this it is clear that he is a great leader (or has great leaders under him, likely both) and hopefully his church is positively impacting peoples lives.
So there's the good stuff.
Now the issues I have with
Osteen.
I believe he focuses only on half the gospel message. He talks all about God is love. And well, he is but God is also just and demands justice. I have listened to
Osteen on T.V. a couple of times and he will not even say
satan but rather just calls
satan our adversary or the enemy, which is also said in the Bible but why do we have to make
satan so "mysterious"? Satan is the devil our Lord Jesus Christ's enemy and therefore ours as well. Anyhow, I digress. . .
In the interview with Larry King, Joel
Osteen was given a perfect opportunity to clearly speak what the Bible says about Christ. John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." That pretty much sums it up. I know there are great theological discussions out there about what if a person searches after God and obeys his conscience (our "internal" law) but this is all speculative and can not be proven. The Bible, and Jesus himself, specifically says you have to come through Jesus to get to God and eventually heaven.
I know this is a divisive point with other faiths but that's just the way it is. Sorry. I can not tell someone they are going to hell but God can and he clearly laid out the rules. Maybe there are some extenuating circumstances that we will find out when we stand before him but until then we have to follow what we know.
I believe it is time we take a stand for what we know is true and quite being so
wishy-washy. We will offend some, but why can we not say they are offensive? (oh wait, because then we are narrow minded and not being sensitive to their beliefs. What about mine?!?!) We must take a stand, if not for us then for our children and our children's children (see the post above if you don't believe me.)
Well, that's as concise as I can make it.
